A quinceanera dress is most typically a ball gown. Latin American girls choose dresses that are extremely poofy and normally in a solid color. Colors that are very popular to wear for a quinceanera are pink, yellow, blue, gold, red, white, and purple. Pink was the most traditional color for a long time because it was used to symbolize the purity of the quinceanera. Ball gowns have a fitted bodice and a very large and full skirt that has layers and layers of crinolin to hold it out. If it is not poofy enough, crinolin slips are added to enhance the skirt. The dress is most commonly made from tulle but sometimes you can find it made from taffeta, satin, or organza. The Latin American girl does not normally show her shoulders at her party, so a bolero or shrug is sold or made to go with the dress. Modesty is highly enforced as this party is her coming out party into society and a transition from girl to woman.
Many prom and pageant companies make gowns specifically for a quinceanera. Allure and Mori Lee make gowns for quinceaneras that include extra poofy skirts and bolero jackets and/or shrugs in matching fabric or a matching color. Regardless of whether a prom or pageant company designates a certain brand name to quinceanera dresses, it should not be hard to find one. Most prom companies make ball gowns, and as mentioned before, if the skirt is not large enough, crinolin can be added. In today's times, having a dress specifically hand made for the quinceanera is not necessary because of all the options in the prom and pageant companies. The companies will even send extra fabric to have straps or bolero jackets to be made.
Quinceanera parties have two other groups of people that will need formal dresses to attend the party. One group is the "damas." These ladies are a group of her peers that attend the party with her and there are normally fourteen of them. Ladies that are chosen to be damas are dressed in the same gowns and in a color that coordinates with the quinceanera dress. Bridesmaid dresses are commonly used for the damas' dresses because they can easily be ordered in specific sizes and colors and all will be alike. If the damas are not required to wear the same dresses, they will most definitely wear the same color. Bridesmaid companies like Mori Lee, Allure, Alfred Angelo, Forever Yours, Bari Jay, and Bill Levkoff, all offer many color options and styles for the damas.
