In the category of what to expect, depending on which military branch's ball you are attending, it may vary. Generally speaking, there are some things that will most likely go on at every event. First of all, there will be a cocktail hour. This time usually starts around 5 or 6 pm and it is a time for mingling and for having a few drinks. Immediately following this would be a receiving line. The couple walk together in the line, with the woman always in front. This is a time where you will shake hands, have simple greetings, and will be introduced by your last name. Once the receiving line is completed, you move straight on to the dinner hour. At some military balls, dinner is sounded by a horn and you are expected to take your assigned seat. The dinner will include many courses and several presentations that will honor certain members of the service. When the presentations are finished, the bar will open and the party will begin! Dancing is always a fun time at the military ball.
