Dressed For The Occasion

Shopping for a Dress for your Event?

It isn’t every day that we are invited to a fabulous get-together. A night filled with dining and dancing and wonderful company isn’t complete without a long glamorous gown and the confidence to rock it. Such an undertaking can seem overwhelming but here at Dress Therapy we have a simple system for accomplishing your goal:
1. Let your fingers do the shopping
The Internet is perfect for getting a feel for the collections that are available during a particular season. Generally designers have two main collections: Spring (prom/pageant) and Fall (Homecoming). Lines are usually released in conception: to catalogue, and online sites several months before they’re available for purchase. You can look at the styles ahead of most people on both the designer’s main website as well as ours and note any styles that you love. Be sure to write down what you like about each dress: the shape, detailing, etc.
*Keep in mind that styles are designed for one season and once sold out they’re unavailable. Only top sellers are carried over for further production. Be sure to note what year the dress is from and keep in mind that a dress that is even a season old may not be available after its original collection run. Have a few styles in mind that you like*
2. Budget, budget, budget
Like any major purchase you need to take into account what you’re able and willing to spend. Designer gowns are not custom made, but rather to a standard size chart and most gals will need alterations of some sort. That in addition to accessories, and other expenses may alter what your true dress budget is. Here at Dress Therapy we do offer an array of payment options that allow anyone the chance to get the dress of their dreams.
*Unlike many other products, formal wear doesn’t often go on sale. The nature of the industry, custom orders, and highly sought after designs create a standard for pricing across the board. Designer gowns are not produced in high quantities that force their liquidation once the weather turns. Like any luxury commodity, a designer gown keeps its value and desirability, keeping prices relatively steady*
3. The early bird catches the worm
We keep a wide variety of stock in during the high Season (January –May) so you can purchase off the Cart if you find “the one”. Throughout these months we are constantly receiving new gown, almost daily. In the case that you choose a gown that we do not have, custom ordering typically takes a few weeks. To ensure you the perfect choice, it is important to order as soon as you’re able. If you delay your shopping for a dress, the one you’ve want may already be taken for your big night. Should your event occur during the rest of the year don’t worry. Although our inventory may slow, we are able to special order pieces for you. The time-line for these later year requests may take longer, so let us know your event date so we can ensure you get it in time.
*We will always walk you through the ordering process. If you are unsure of your dress sizing, just contact us. We will help advise you on what size we recommend based upon the standard size chart and our knowledge of the fit of the dress and line. When opting for ordering through our online shop, be sure to follow the size chart for each individual designer; we’re always a phone call away for any questions you have*
4. Open your Mind
You may have a vision for your event, but are unsure of its coming to fruition. Once you’ve put on the dream dress and jewels in store only come to find the look is not all you hoped for. When it comes to formal wear there is more than meets the eye: the gowns that look amazing on hangers may fit you unusually or a dress you would never have given the time of day hugs your every curve. Here’s a general idea of styles and fits available:
Mermaid or fit-n-flare: Generally the fitted aspect of the bodice will run from the bust to the mid-thigh or knee. The skirts are full; often will several layers of tulle or crinoline keeping the full bell shape. This style’s silhouette can often make you appear long and lean, but is if not properly fitted and tailored can overwhelm smaller framed or petite gals.
A-Line: The most versatile and common cut; this style will accentuate the upper body while gently skimming the body. Often times they are accompanied with empire waistlines (which helps to show off the smallest part of you). An elegant and classic look A-line gowns easily transition through fashion trends in formal wear. A form flattering construction that is not tight allows this style to be comfortable and able to adapt to any tailoring changes you make in the future.
Corsets: Always a favorite among women for their abilities to make your waist itty bitty, corsets typically come in two lengths: short (which will run from the top of the back of the dress to the waist) and full length (which will fall at or about your tailbone). A great way to ensure a piece’s longevity in your wardrobe, a corset back will change with you should you gain or lose weight. The intricate look of a fully laced tieback is both elegant and sexy.
Ball gowns- The choice in style for the gal who dreams of a princess dress. Bodices range from fitted to your belly button to drop waist styles that will be fitted to your hip and then flare out. Ball gowns have are perfect for every figure: petite gals can opt for a lower waistline and a less full skirt to make them appear taller, while curvier ladies can go for a short fitted bodice with a fuller skirt to balance a full bust line. Ball gowns are perfect for a magical and romantic look.
Sweetheart Neckline- The name says it all. Instead of a straight line, this design combines the modesty of a higher cut with the flattering aspects of a v neckline (without all the skin). Sweetheart necklines are perfect for those gals with short torsos or who are generally petite. The slight dip in the front helps to open up the frame showing off shoulders and the décolleté. For those ladies who have a fuller chest a sweetheart neckline is good for the saucy impact of a v-neck but with a more modest approach.
Halter Neckline- With straps that pull up and towards the back of the neck a halter helps to draw the eye up. This style of construction is perfect for those gals who have narrow shoulders. The focus up to the neck and face widens the appearance. A popular choice, the design of a halter affords all the impact of a strapless with the comfort of not having to fiddle with the top of your dress throughout the evening.
Strapless- A preference for many women, strapless necklines are available on many gowns in a variety of patterns and fabrics. Strapless gowns have neckline that can range from straight across to, deep v with crumb catcher detailing. Regardless of your shape a strapless gown will show off your shoulders, neck, and back. The key to wearing this style is a proper fit. You don’t want to tug and pull at your dress all night to keep it up. Your top should be fitted, not tight, and the cups of the bodice should sit flush with your chest. A well-tailored strapless gown will ensure you a night to remember.

Always keep in mind that each and every event creates a unique environment. Location, event purpose, and your status in life (age, etc) should all play in how you dress your body. You want to be classy and appropriate. When in doubt dial back; you’ll never regret being tastefully conservative. A formal gown should make you feel elegant and chic. A well-chosen style and tailored alterations will ensure a night to remember: curve hugging lines and jaw-dropping details will shine in a well-chosen design.
